Ethnic Rhinoplasty

What is Ethnic Rhinoplasty and how is it approached differently to normal Rhinoplasty procedures?

When taking into account that every nose is different, the words Ethnic Rhinoplasty is used to characterise the shape and size of noses in African, Middle Eastern, and Asian patients.

In the early days of performing Ethnic Rhinoplasty, the common goal for patients was to try to achieve a more westernised look. But that has rapidly changed to patients looking for specialised rhinoplasty surgeons who are experienced in making changes to the shape and size of the nose but maintaining the ethnicity feel in harmony with the patients’ features.

If you have noticed, there is actually a huge difference between the noses of the different ethnic groups. And when you look closely, there are even more particular variations for those within the same ethnic groups.

The difference in noses between ethnic groups is huge and if one looks closely, there are even more variations within the same ethnic group. As we have always mentioned, one nose shape does not fit all and that goes for ethnic results too.

African American Rhinoplasty

This term is actually a broad one because there are numerous variations for this group. Most African American patients will have bigger, flatter noses with commonly wider nostrils. Therefore those patients who get rhinoplasty request for their noses to become narrower with a more defined tip and a narrow bridge.

Usually, this can mean our surgeons would use grafts taken from behind the ear for these cases as patients in this category tend to have thicker skin and thinner cartilages in their noses. These grafts are placed onto the nasal tip, bridge or the base of the nose thus creating a more natural result. African American Rhinoplasty can proceed with additional small scars, especially where the nostrils are reduced in size.

Asian Rhinoplasty (Far East Asian)

The type of rhinoplasty surgery that is done on Asians is virtually opposite to that of white caucasian patients because the former requests are commonly for reduction rhinoplasty. Ethnic Rhinoplasty for Asians on the other hand wants to augment the size of their nose and bridge.

Since Asian noses take a flatter and wider profile, rhinoplasty surgeons often look to increase the projection of the nose. This can be achieved by inserting grafts, removed from behind the ear,  which are often positioned at the bridge of the nose but leaving the tip unaffected. This is the most developed way to maintain that natural Asian characteristic of the Asian facial features.

Asian patients commonly ask for the narrowing of the nostrils. This can be altered by gently breaking the nasal bone and resetting it during the procedure is to achieve a narrower nostril profile. This method is the safest way to create a more nasal projection in Asian patients

The nasal tip can also be increased by using the nose’s natural tissue which is removed from the septum. This is much preferred by rhinoplasty surgeons because it eliminates the risks of rejection.

Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Nose

This type of nose very commonly has a strong profile with a high angle. There are numerous variations within the group that includes Arabic, Indian, Pakistani nose features. But they generally have an overall larger nose that is a straight bridge or a large hump. They also have a large tip due to thicker skin compared to white Caucasian patients.

The goal of the procedure for ethnic rhinoplasty should be to create a more natural-looking result. The nose should be harmonious with other features of the face. This includes the side profile on the nose and creating a softer profile where the nose meets the forehead and also the front-facing profile, where the nose is harmonious with the cheek and jawline features.

It is important that patients look for a surgeon who specialises on performing this specific type of ethnic rhinoplasty.

Our Rhinoplasty surgeons have performed over 300 ethnic rhinoplasty patients in 2014 on patients mixed between the 3 main ethnic groups above.
