Advantages and Disadvantages of Closed Rhinoplasty

Advantages and Disadvantages of Closed Rhinoplasty

A closed rhinoplasty involves no incisions on the outside of the nose. The procedure is done inside the nose that allows the doctor to access the nasal bridge and tip. It is one of the options that patients have when it comes to getting a nose job. There will be no visible scars after the surgery. Before you undergo a Rhinoplasty procedure, you should first know the advantages and disadvantages of closed rhinoplasty.

The Advantages of Closed Rhinoplasty

  • Shorter Surgery Time:

A closed rhinoplasty will require less time than an open one. That means the patient will need less anaesthesia for the surgery. For some patients, this is an important factor when choosing between open and closed nose job. Also, with less incisions being made, the time to complete the surgery is up to 30 minutes shorter to finish. No External Scars

  • Less Scarring

Because there are no external incisions, there will be no external scars. The procedure is performed internally, and the surgeon will ensure that there will be no strong visible signs of the surgery, especially across the columella, which is the column of skin found between the two nostrils.

  • Better Circulation to the Skin of the Nasal Tip

This is extremely important to consider. Because there is no need to make an incision across the columella, the circulation of the skin is not disrupted. The skin remains intact after the surgery. There will be less nose swelling after a closed rhinoplasty because the natural drainage channels of the skin were untouched during the surgery. That’s why the nose will heal faster compared to patients who underwent an open Rhinoplasty.

The Disadvantages of Closed Rhinoplasty

  • Requires More Skill

Because the procedure is carried out without lifting the nasal skin, the surgeon makes all the changes via the narrow openings of the nostril. It is a “blind” procedure and everything is done by feel and through sight of the outer appearance. You should ensure that your surgeon has the right skill set to do the task if you chose to undergo a closed rhinoplasty. This means you surgeon is performing more rhinoplasty surgeries than any other cosmetic surgery. It also means that your surgeon specialises in closed rhinoplasty.

  • Limited Number of Revisions

The procedure limits the number of revisions that the doctor can make. That’s why closed nose job is only recommended for people who want to have minor alterations. People who require complex changes to their nose should opt for an open rhinoplasty. Complex surgical procedures are impossible because of the lack of exposure and access.

  • Difficult to Visualise Nose in Natural State

During closed rhinoplasty surgery, the nasal skin is stretched in order to access the internal part of the nose. This action can distort the nasal cartilage that makes it difficult to see the natural state of the nose.

Remember that your surgeon will be advising the best techniques, whether open or closed Rhinoplasty depending on your goals and what you are wishing to achieve. The advantages and disadvantages of closed rhinoplasty are fully discussed at your consultation with your surgeon.
